There is this one culture which sotho people do to women, they call umqaba' circumsizing women on their vagina (This is very sensitive info that is never talked about to anyone) yep, the vagina you'd ask yourself where and why would they do that, but it is said that they cut off the two side skin on the vagina making it smooth but there is no medical equiptment they just use a minora blade and just apply their mutu to the areas no painkillers, no medication. I dont know about smooth vaginas but would you find this kind of surgery brutal and disturbing?? Is it taboo?? would you do it??

At the very least she will be horribly traumatized for the rest of her life being forced down and having the most sensitive parts of her hacked off.

We should be applying the same term that the World Health Organization uses to describe it: Female Genital Mutilation. "Female circumcision" isn't an accurate descriptor for the practice. "Mutilation" is much more to the point. http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs241/en/
It is a barbaric act with no medical purpose whatsoever. It apparently has become culturally entrenched in some places but this in no way makes it right.
Please assist your friend to find safe haven if she does not wish to undergo this idiotic and dangerous and ILLEGAL procedure.

Horrific to think someone is being brutalized in such an appalling manner.

I've known women who can't even go toilet properly after the surgery is done.. they experience pain when they have sex, sex becomes something to be scared of, only the man has fun...
She has every right to be terrified...

Female circumcision is not the same as male circumcision and is also not about aesthetics. It is usually intended to prevent women from enjoying sex ever as a way to prevent her from cheating, basically a way to keep a woman under male control (like Chigirl said). Soon 103 is very accurate that it is like cutting off the head of your penis. They remove the clitoris (more packed with nerves than the head of a penis) as well as frequently the labia minora, which contain clitoral tissue. Frequently they sew things partially closed as well. It's is horrifically painful, probably for the rest of her life. Also it deprives her of an immense joy and pleasure that can come from sex. Furthermore, it differs from male circumcision in that it is not frequently done as young, rather when she is older and more likely to remember the pain and terror. Male circumcision I've heard can make the penis a bit less sensitive, but not in a way that makes sex less fun. I'm pretty sure it started for hygienic reasons, though I'm not sure. Female circumcision is done for no such reason. It is so she is sexual slave to her man. In many countries cosmetic surgery on labia is becoming popular. While I don't agree that the surgery should ever be done for cosmetic purposes, it is nowhere near the same thing as female circumcision. The woman has a choice then, whereas with female circumcision she is forced into it. Female circumcision is a true horror and one of the worst crimes against women in the world.Like I said, Chigirl said it perfectly below.

It's horrific and needs to stop.
The reason they're very sensitive about it and don't tell anyone is because they know it's wrong. Very wrong.

Soon103 said it better than anyone of us I believe. Circumcision of women is not like circumcision of men. It is not even close. It is closer to cutting off the head of the penis and for you to always have pain and discomfort, not only during sex but also in daily life. And running the risk of dying, serious infections, and it is life changing. Circumcision of men is neither. Most men who are circumcised are happy about it, don't feel any discomfort, and many prefer to be circumcised. There is a huge difference.
I would also suggest that you educate yourself more about what a female circumcision is. That goes for everyone. It is not about beauty, or being happy with your body. It is about men wanting control over women, and women not being allowed to have a sexuality. This is not a west versus 3rd world war. Not at all. This is about human rights, torture of women, and womens rights. The women who have this done to them suffer, and they had the surgery forced upon them. Not only did they suffer during the surgery, but for the rest of their lives after.
Educate yourself and read up about it, and read the interviews with women who have been circumcised. This is a mans way of dominating women. Fine and all to those rare few who should choose to have a circumcision done, but the wast majority have this forced upon them.

When done in a proper setting, it can be safe, and is a matter of personal preference. Ultimately it is your body, and you have the right to choose what you do with it.
The problem comes in with the way in which it is typically practiced. If you ever want to lose your appetite, read through some of the horror stories from women who have had this done to them. Often what this means is the removal of the clitoris and sewing the labia together just above the urethra. I've heard interviews of women who have had the entire area scrapped with broken glass (because it was the sharpest thing that could be found). It was outlawed for that exact reason.
Ultimately, there are safe ways to have this done. While I don't think it is necessary, I'm also not in your body. If you do decide to have this procedure done, please make sure you discuss with them exactly what they will be doing. There is such a wide range of what people consider "female circumcision" that you have to be really careful.

Female circumcision is illegal in Britain... we find it barbaric and cruel and people who do such things on girl children will be sent to jail...
We have refugees who come here, and we find that they have been cut or sown up... our doctors spend a lot of money and a lot of time trying to heal their body and their mind..
This is not only forbidden in Britain, we also work very hard to make sure that nobody in the world has to suffer like this.

I admit, its not something I would do, but I wouldn't want to put up with the pain.
I don't know that I find it disturbing though, it is a part of the culture. Many western authorities, however, do not agree with it and have labelled it as brutal, and unjust. I believe the same thing happens in some Islamic sects and is highly frowned upon by western authorities.
I don't know who is right, but I hear it is painful and HIGHLY unecessary, but maybe that's the same as circumsizing a guy, and that doesn't seem to cause nearly as much uproar. But perhaps it is just because unsafe equipment is used to circumsize the girls?
I understand that talking about it, in any religion is very taboo and hence why many people know very little about it or are unaware it happens.
Unfortunately there is no clear cut line what is right or wrong. It depends on how the individual feels about it. Denying the practise is to deny a big part of the culture. Is that right? You have to decide how you feel about it, maybe try talking to some girls you know have had it done and see how they feel about it?

To be honest...Humans have some pretty messed up ideas as to what is beautiful. GOD already made us perfect, but for us, that's not good enough. We have to find some messed up idea to call beautiful.
If GOD did not want us having foreskin, he wouldn't have put there. We have skin to protect our delicate parts...eye lids to protect our eyes, lips to protect out mouth, and foreskin to protect the entrance to our sexual parts.
I do not thing anyone should have to go through that unless they choose to. But that is just me.

A

It is actually illegal. To be honest. It is brutal indeed, and it is also illegal. Don't forget that. Don't forget why it is illegal either: precisely because it is ruining a woman's body, it is dangerous as there can be infections, and it is a surgery not done in a clinic, often women are not asked if they want this surgery, and there are no pain killers involved.
For the very same reasons, many argue that circumcision of baby boys should be illegal as well. Although circumcision for women is more serious and dangerous, circumcised men can still live normal lives. Circumcised women can face death. The cutting often results in life-threatening complications such as septicaemia, haemorrhaging or cysts. Women die from it. Also, women who are circumcised will not be able to enjoy sex, sex will be painful. Very painful.
"It is known by a variety of names, the most common of which are female genital mutilation (FGM), female circumcision, or simply "cutting" - a word which somehow conveys the raw pain its prepubescent victims suffer.
Most people will be unfamiliar with this practice, which involves removing part or all of the clitoris, the surrounding labia (the outer part of the vagina) and sometimes the sewing up of the vagina, leaving only a small opening for urine and menstrual blood."
