Question - (28 April 2009) 7 Answers - (Newest, 4 May 2009)
A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

I'm 18 and i have no idea about what i should be doing with my life. when i was at school the advisor was telling me that baised on her impression of me office work would be the ideal way to go.But i just think that it would drive me crazy and bore me to sleep.I just want to be in a job that i enjoy and that would match my personlity.I'm a shy person to most people that meet me and i'm unsure about my abillities. But i do love to be creative wich is why i was trying for a hairdressing apprenticeship but being in that type of environment i just diddn't feel that i belonged. So now i'm back to square one. Thinking about going on some kind of course at one of the colege sites. Has anyone got any suggestions.

SirenaBlusera agony auntYou should explore what interests you.

Your advisor's opinion is not the end all, be all. :)

anon642 agony auntOh thankyou so so much for asking this question, i was unsure of writing it on here with it being about relationship etc, but im so glad you have!! I am in EXACTLY the same position as you, not a clue what to do, so many things interest me but some of those things i need to get qualifications for because i didn't take the write ones at school and then there's some which im unsure of whether i'll actually enjoy and at the end of the day, the things that REALLY interest me are so different to each other that i can't pick but can't do all of them at the same time!

Anyway..i'll be following this question because it may become of use to me aswell.

In the meantime, good luck and keep us posted! :)

I'm afraid I can't answer that. But I do know how you feel! I'm almost 18, finish college this year and decided not to go to University yet because I don't know what to do. I thought i'd like to do something relating to my course but now i'm not so sure...I guess (big guess) is that you have to try new things and see what you do and don't enjoy. Then go out there and achieve what you want to do! This is what i'm hoping anyway :)... We're young and have our whole lives ahead of us. Good luck finding your career path!

SirenaBlusera agony auntYou have to follow your heart, but see what it is you really want. Try your hand at things, travel, try an internship, do research and talk to people.

Young people change careers a lot nowadays, remember, very few things are irrevocable.

Maybe, try working with disabled people, that will allow you to expand your creative horizons.

I know someone who works with people who had autism and Asperger's syndrome and says it's a good opportunity to do something that does pay, and is conventional, but not boring.

However, you will need to learn a lot on health and safety though, due to the nature of their condition.

It would be very hard to tell you what to do with your life without meeting you to be honest.

Your best bet is to ask people who know you.

The other thing to do is to get a copy of your local yellow pages and have a flick through. You will be amazed what businesses there are out there.

Make a list of the things that look interesting and see what they have in common.

Good Luck!! xx

A female reader, jessica04 United States +, writes (28 April 2009):

jessica04 agony auntFind a temp agency that can place you in an office job, like your advisor suggested.

Yes, it can be boring, but it will at least be a steady paycheck, and in the meantime you can take classes online or at school, or get involved with things in your community. The more you branch out, the better you'll know what you really want to do.

And you never know, maybe you will get a temp job for a magazine agency that will turn into a full time permanent position, and you can give your input on layouts and editorials. You might stumble into something you love. Give it a try, see how it goes. Nothing says you can't quit if its terrible.
