A male reader, Namatjira United Kingdom +, writes (15 February 2008):

Post natal depression is a very specific type of depression although the actual symptoms are consistent with some other forms of depression. If however she was already depressed then it is likely that after the birth her clinical depression may have deepened. Certainly she should be under medical supervision and if not already the sooner the better.

Depending on her neurology and metabolism, she may respond to any of many different forms of treatment. I would not expect to get any specific advice from this forum other than see your doctor - soon. It is hard enough to diagnose depression correctly when you have the patient in front of you but by remote based on a description of symptoms from a family member makes it virtually impossible.

One thing is sure, no matter what her problems are, a specialist is needed and your GP is the route you should follow.

Good luck, and be patient as there are no magic bullets that can fix it quickly.

I'm no expert on this, although I did have a depressive wife once. As such, I've been on the receiving end of it and suffered because of it.

Depression is depression. It's not nice, and I don't think there are different kinds of it, just different causes.

If she has had depression for two years and has since given birth then it is very likely that her depression could worsen.

I presume she is under medication from the GP? It sounds like it would be a good idea to encourage her to go and talk to her GP.
