Kissing is generally fine.
It is possible to contract the herpes virus through kissing. The herpes virus is the virus responsible for cold sores. However, it's usually only transmissable from contact with an open sore and it's usually pretty obvious when someone has a cold sore! Herpes also affects the genitals but you can't catch genital herpes or a cold sore just by kissing a person with genital herpes. The herpes virus can also be transmitted from mouth to genital contact. Cold sores are uncomfortable but easily treated. (genital herpes is harder to treat but not impossible)
Thrush, (although not exactly a sexually transmitted disease) can be transmitted by mouth to mouth and mouth genital contact but is very easily treated.
HIV is very very very rarely transmitted through kissing as the virus is not present in the saliva. It is present in blood, semen and vaginal secretions. So it would be possible to transmit it through kissing if BOTH people had significant bleeding wounds in their mouths and the blood moved from mouth to mouth. I think anybody with a mouth wound that bad would actually want to kiss anyone!
My advice is
1) Don't kiss anyone with a cold sore (and don't kiss anyone if you have one) until it's healed
2) Don't kiss anyone with very obviously bleeding gums or who has just had a tooth pulled out unless you know their HIV status
3) Go and kiss the girls and have fun!

You can contract mononucleosis (the Epstein-Barr virus) also called "the kissing disease".

Good luck in your research! And have fun learning how to kiss. Be well.
