Hello Anon,
I asked my doctor this question a long time ago and she said no, inserting a tampon will not break the hymen. I've also just done some research online and found that most people say that it is possible, but it's very rare (also due to the fact that there are different shaped hymens).
What I also found out is that if you ride a bike or a horse or do anything like that, those activities could also tear your hymen. If you take a look on google, you'll probably find the same thing as I did. You could also always ask your doctor to see what he/she thinks about it.
So short answer - yes it's possible that you broke your hymen with a tampon, but not likely.
Take care.
