Can I have some advice on how not to stress and how to stay motivated to work this hard on my studies?

I'm a teenager in high school and I feel so stressed. I have a lot of homework which keeps me up longer than I want to be and every assignment affects my grades dramatically.

It feels like I can never take a break from school sometimes and I hate feeling like I have to put forth so much effort just to keep my grades up. I'm always tired no matter how much sleep I get, but I try to go to bed as early as I can.

I also have a bad habit of procrastinating. But even if my habit has improved, I still find I feel very stressed and there's no time to relax. I don't want to feel this way all the time, but I know it's only going to get worse when I go to college so maybe I just need to get used to it.

Sometimes I don't think education and all this stress is worth going through all of this for a stable future, but I know I can't quit studying. It would disappoint my parents and my mom tells me how it's all worth it and how she wishes she had a degree so she could be a doctor.

My Dad tells me not to stress out and that I shouldn't have anything to stress about, but I don't think he gets it.

My Dad probably never had to work this hard in school so it's easy for him to say. I need some advice on how not to stress and how to stay motivated to work this hard. Thanks for reading and any advice you have.

VSAddict agony auntThanks for your reply. It helps me a lot and whenever I feel unmotivated or like I should quit, I'll just look back at your answer. I'm a junior and it would've been nice if someone could've told me how school would be much more difficult this year, but oh well. I'll get used to it and I look forward to the moment I'm done with school altogether. I'm glad I'm not the only teen that's feeling overwhelmed all the time. Thanks for being able to relate :)

TasteofIndia agony auntWell, here's some good news. High school is the worst because of all the homework. In college, you don't have that same sort of night-by-night homework. I've found that generally you have 3-4 exams and a term paper per class. A lot of reading, but you can generally go at your own pace. There's not all that overnight homework that you have during high school. So, rather than having 75 smaller assignments to do, you have one bigger assignment. I'll take that any day. You're probably a Junior? Senior? Those years are the worst, particularly Junior year. Sooo many exams, the SATs, so much homework. I'm a double-major Senior in college and my sister is a Senior in HS and God, I feel worse for HER! She's loaded down with soooo much work.

I'm a procrastinator too. Whenever I force myself to actually do my assignments before the last second, suddenly life gets so much easier (why I have to force myself to do so even now at 25 is so confusing. I know it makes my life easier, and yet it is so hard to make myself do). Get into the habit NOW of doing stuff ahead of time, and then you'll have so much less stress and so much more time for relaxation. The stress comes from the last-minute workload. Trust me, I know alllll about it. I can completely commiserate.

You don't want to be stuck working at Wal Mart forever, so keep trucking and it WILL be worth it in the end. Like your Mom, you'll regret it and keep saying "what if" if you don't get a college education. And, your life will be piled with stress for your entire life without the degree. But if you get the degree, the stress you're having now will pay off by giving you a much easier life down the road. The torture will be worth it!! I promise.

So, keep trucking, know that college is not the same. It's hard, sure - but it's hard in a very different way. It's less physical work, and more working on comprehension and thematic understanding.
