Hey Everyone,

I finished my freshman year in high school this past June. My GPA was a 3.15. I was just wondering, is this a bad GPA? Will colleges still look at me for acceptance? I don't want to got an Ivy league or anything, but I do want to go to a good college.I want to be a fiction writer so mostly liberal arts schools. Is it possible to get into a good liberal arts college with a 3.15? And if not can I raise it?

Some colleges I'm interested in to give you an idea of where I want to go:

Evergreen (First choice for BA)

Goddard(I want to go here after Evergreen for my MFA)

These are all tied for my 2nd choice for both degrees:

Mt. Holyoke

UMass

Amherst College

Reed

Bard

Sorry for all the info and lists, but I'd really love some help!

Colleges do NOT just look at your GPA or test scores. Admissions departments will accept a 3.15 GPA so long as you are a well-rounded student who participates in extracurricular activities like sports, clubs, and organizations.

Participating in band, chorus, theater, art, scouting, religious organizations, student government, intermural sports, jv and/or varsity sports, big brother big sister, organizing new clubs, volunteer work etc. all boost your potential at being accepted by any of the schools you wish to attend as long as your GPA and test scores are above average. Also, taking advantage of any college courses available through your high school and taking advanced placement courses will help immensely.

Talk to your school's guidance counselor. Write out your goals and plan what you feel would best allow you to get into your dream school.

If you already know what you want to major in while in college, volunteer at businesses or organizations locally to get a feel for your future. For example, if you want to be a doctor or nurse you can volunteer at a nursing home or be a 'candy-striper' in a local hospital; if you want to be a vet, volunteer at a local animal shelter; if you want to be a teacher consider tutoring younger students at a local school.

When you do volunteer work, keep a log including places, dates, hours, and have a supervisor sign each entry. Make friends with the people you work with. Be responsible, mature, and positive. These people will be more than willing to provide recommendation letters to help boost your application.

Colleges don't usually accept someone with just a 3.15 GPA, but they will accept a well-rounded student who volunteers, participates in extra-curricular activities, has character, and just happens to have a 3.15 GPA.

Can't say anything about the colleges you've mentioned but I think you're fine. You started off high school very well and my advice is to keep going.trust me you have PLENTY of time to raise your GPA (even up to a 3.7!) Just stay focused and don't stop researching colleges.

And one more piece of advice, usually colleges go easy on those students applying for the summer term. In other words, their qualifications are a bit lower. Sounds to me like you are on the right track. In senior year, remember to take the SAT/ACT as many times as it takes to reach your maximum score and apply for as many colleges as possible.

Also don't stop writing!! College entrance essays are very important. I'm a sophomore college student and I've gone through what you have. You're fine :)

Good luck!

VSAddict agony auntYou have a pretty good GPA so don't worry about that and make sure it stays that way or higher until you graduate. But if you want to raise it, try some extra-credit projects in all your classes, if your teachers have any. Study more but don't cram and get a better understanding of what you're learning and that'll help raise it.
