writes: Can high blood pressure medication change someone's personality? When my boyfriend doesn't takes his, he is awful! His combative personality almost destroyed our relationship early on, then his doctor switched his BP meds and magically he mellowed out and became the sweet, wonderful man I knew he really was. But some days he doesn't take his meds and on those days he picks fights, he criticizes me, he raises his voice and we end up in a fight every time. I have finally started asking "Have you taken your pills today?" to which he refuses to believe has anything to do with the problem in his behavior. He doesn't see the difference at all! An hour after taking his pills he's mellow and calm. A totally different person. Can the medication really make that much of an impact on his personality? Reply to this Question Share |

I think you need to speak to a pharmacist about this one. It's not something I've heard anybody mention before. There are lots of different medications that are used to reduce high blood presuure. One group of drugs are called beta-blockers (their names usually end in "..olol" (e.g. atenolol or propanolol)These medicines slow down the heart rate and in some cases are used to treat people with panic disorders during an attack. I'm not sure about this but if your boyfriend's irritability is caused by anxiety, this might explain it.

I don't think you will get an accurate answer here as you may need a professional, but when my grandmother hasn't taken her BP meds she goes a little crazy or hallucinates. One time, we all forgot to make sure she had taken it in the morning and she started spinning around seeing creatures and generally acting completely out of character. She is normally a calm, respectable woman. I suggest that you make it your job to just lay out his meds for him each day. You don't want to risk a massive stroke if he often misses his meds.
