A female United Kingdom age 36-40, anonymous writes:

Hi, I know this isn't a relationship question but I need a serious answer as I can't find one on google.

I have gained a stone in the last year and I'm worried its because of my addiction to ice? I'm very active, I don't have time for 'exercise' but I am on my feet all day in work and I'm always doing housework/walking etc.

I've never actually been on a diet but my lifestyle hasn't altered much in the last year.

I really want to lose this wieght and wondered basically does ice main you gain weight if eaten excesively?

DanceInTheDark agony auntNo. Ice doesn't make you gain weight, but you say you're addicted to it? You need to see a doctor. Craving ice usually means you're deficient in iron, and may have anemia.

I think people with a compulsion to eat ice are usually deficient in some very important minerals, you should go and see a doctor and get it checked out.

angelDlite agony auntno. ice is just frozen water, so does not contain calories in fact it can burn calories coz it makes your body 'work' to bring itself back up to the right temperature.

if your diet and exercise level has remained the same but you are now gaining weight the cause is probably just due to you getting older. you have to be more careful what you eat and get more active the older you get. see your doctor to make sure there is no medical cause for your weight gain

A female reader, chigirl Norway +, writes (31 July 2011):

chigirl agony auntYour body isn't in a fixed state you know, you are always developing. Gaining weight isn't unusual, unless it is radical. If you eat and do the same as usual, and gain weight, it probably just means your body is growing into full adulthood where it is typical to gain weight easier. While a teenager or young adult you often have a high metabolism, which will slow down as you get older. The average age to slow down is around 25-30. It depends on your genes though, so look to your family, maybe ask your mother. As you grow older is it normal to have to watch what you eat even more closely, and work out more intensively to stay fit.

celtic_tiger agony auntI highly doubt it as ice is just frozen water....

Your weight gain could be due to anything... remember as you get older your metabolism can change and you have to start working harder to achieve the same things.

A female reader, VSAddict United States +, writes (31 July 2011):

VSAddict agony auntI don't think ice makes you gain weight. Ice is water and water has no calories or sugar. So you can keep eating your ice because that's not likely the cause of your weight gain. You already have an active lifestyle, so don't worry about it but if you want to lose that stone, then maybe consider some extra activity besides what you're already doing.
