reader, anonymous, writes (17 October 2010): Yes, it can def. Depression is also stress and stress does indeed cause a low sex drive cause it creates anxiety. If the man has insecurities, reassurance is good. The feeling can def be long term. However, one should seek counseling if it gets to that point as it is unhealthy and can affect many aspects of life. Hope he's okay :)

reader, anonymous, writes (17 October 2010): Yes & Yes... the way depression is usually treated is to treat the chemical imbalance in the brain with medications (sometimes a combo of meds) that will adjust the levels in the brain to the original non-depressed state.
Can depression be long term, yes. Treatment is required, and if undertaken (and stuck) with can reverse in a few months. Sometimes, longer is the doctor has to adjust meds to work on the patient. Many people will get worse, and some will get to a point where they realize that treatment is required. Some are not that lucky.
When a depressed person is suffering they can feel inadequate and unworthy of love (and sex and receiving affection).
Some people are reluctant to seek treatment, and can feel "defective" and untreatable. This is the illness talking to them, and their reality, but it is not the truth.
