I'd like some help and advice on my acne. I have had acne since I was 11 and I am now 17. I understand it is probably my teenage spots. I have tried every product and they just don't work, I have also tried cream and tablets prescribed by my doctor however they dont work either. They said I should see a dermatologist, but I don't know any. I live in the north west, Manchester is the closest city to me. Do you know of any dermatologists around here? Also, do you have to be a certain age? Like 18 or older?

Any help would be much appreciated, Thankyou!

First of all, I'm so sorry to hear you are struggling with this. I totally know what you are going through as I have just got rid of my acne after 7 years with it.

I would suggest you go to your local GP and ask them to refer you. If it's anything like where I live, there will be good dermatologists available in your local hospital so you won't need to travel through to a big city for treatment.

It is quite hard to get a referral though, so be firm with them and tell them how much it is affecting your life (I asked loads of times and got told no, then the time I ended up crying out of frustration I got referred right away!). You don't say if you've had treatment already, so they might want to try you on antibiotics first to see if that makes a difference? I took roaccutane which worked amazingly well but it comes with some very brutal side effects do its definitely a last resort.

As for other advice, try to eat as well as you can as diet definitely does make a difference. Drink lots of water too. Only wash your face morning and night (no more) and use gentle ingredients designed for sensitive skin because some of the harsher stuff can aggravate your skin more (even stuff designed for acne!). No scrubs.

The website acne.org is a great source of information too, and it has forums where you can speak to lots of similar people who know exactly what it's like. I hope this helped you a bit, feel free to ask me if you have any more questions. Good luck!

Tisha-1 agony auntI would suggest you explore your health care services websites: http://www.nhs.uk/Search/Pages/Results.aspx?___JSSniffer=true&q=manchester+dermatology (copy/paste that link as the '?' will interrupt the link.)

Here's another link: http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/Acne/Pages/Introduction.aspx

Have you tried for help from an aesthetician? Boots is renowned even in the US for having some great products.

Ask your GP for a referral to a dermatologist, as you don't know where they are in your area.

Good luck!
