I have heard that bruises on the breasts can cause breast cancer and I wanted to know, is a love bite [hicky] like a bruise? and if so, does getting one on my breast give me a risk of breast cancer?

A female reader, anonymous, writes (21 February 2009):

Haha! Not at all. Cancer is complicated. You cannot get cancer by physically hurting the breast, it's all at the cell level. And a love bite or hickey is not a bruise because you have physically sucked the blood to the surface of the skin. Unless, of course, it was an actual bite. Don't worry, you won't get cancer (unless of course you were going to already!)
