A male reader, rcn United States +, writes (4 November 2007):

rcn agony auntIf you could answer further, I'd appreciate it. My initial thought are, she needs to take her stand as being the parent.

Has she dated others before you? I asked my daughter once why she doesn't want me to date, she said "because you haven't made the best choices in the past." That happened to be before I began studying relationships, back before I could give advice to anyone, because I did have difficulties myself. If she'd had bad relationships in the past, I can see where she doesn't want mom to end up in the same situation.

I don't know what to say about her drinking all the time, other than she needs help. If you'd ever spent a bunch of time with someone who doesn't face reality and is always drunk you'd know this may not be the best relationship to be in.
