writes: I have been taking birth control for a few months now. I'm going on a big vacation with my fiance in a few days so I went ahead and took the next pack of birth control pills so I'd 'skip' a period. Never done this before but I did all the research beforehand. Anyway, now I'm getting spotting and while I'm not super concerned, I was wondering: What's normal as far as this is concerend? How long does it usualy last (it's been on and off for about 24 hours and I hope it stops before I leave) and how much is normal (super light/really heavy, etc.)

Breakthrough bleeding is not uncommen for women who are new to skipping periods. Whether it's pills, depo, or other means such as an IUD it's simply your body's normal response to changes. Depending on the pill you are taking, homone levels in that pill may change throughout the month as your body ovulates. If that is the case, your homone levels were primed to have a period and it should stop within 1-3 days If you normally have very heavy periods it might take as long as 5 days, however it shouldn't be a problem. Previously skipping a period was ill advised, recently in the past few years it's become a more common practice and should not be unhealthy. If you choose to continue skipping periods you should consult with your doctor to adjust your pill appropriately, and understand that you may have breakthrough bleeding from time to time. Your body should re-absorb the material in your uterus, over time. Best advice would be that YOU know your own body better than anyone else, if something doesn't seem right, follow your gut instinct. Everyone is different and reactions to birth control changes effect everyone differently as well! Have a fabulous holiday!
