Breaking up with a long time lover - did you keep in touch as friends? How did you manage?

A female Australia age 51-59, anonymous writes:

To all those out there. I have a question about being friends after a breakup. I have just split from a long term lover, because we could not be together due to external circumstances. We were a fantastic match and broke amicably due to this other factor. Now we are faced with the prospect of friendship.. Do we keep in touch as friends, or would that be a painful route? It seems more painful to break contact, almost like the death of someone you care so much about.. What have you found is the best thing to do, from your own experiences? This is a difficult decision to make!
