hey, i have had an eating disorder for the past 3 years and amn either starvng myself or binging. ive tried to eat normally, 2 years of trying, but it never works., i either get too fat or too skinny and theres nothing i can do about it, no matter how hard i try and be normal. basically now i am fat agaiin, 12 stone, and would like to be 8 stone. was thinking about tryng a diet where I eat 500 calories a day, and burn 300 on the treadmill, then once a week binge on whatever i want. like a 3000-4000 cal binge. I would not to the treat day, but i always end up binging anyway so if i make it part of my diet maybe i wil be able to do it long term? no answers on how unhealthy this is plz or how i should have a normal diet, i know all this and have tried it. was just wondering has anyone tried this sort of thing and if they have how much weight did they lose or gain? tyxx

On this diet you WILL gain weight, because you will put yourself into starvation mode for the 6 days you starve, then when you binge, you will store every single calorie as fat to try and keep you going through the starvation. Please see a councelor or something like that, talk to someone at school or your doctor, you can get help and not harm your body in this way!

DrPsych agony auntYou are suffering from a typical weight change that is associated with yo-yo dieting. If you go on a 500 calorie per day diet then your metabolism will slow down because your body will put itself into starvation mode. It will become efficient at managing on less. Unfortunately this means any initial weight loss may slow right down as time goes by. It also means you will be very tired from lack of nutrition. There will be insufficient mineral and vitamin intake in such a diet. This means you will have a range of symptoms such as receding gums, bad breath, anaemia of the blood, lack of periods (which is a cancer and fertility risk), thyroid abnormality, brittle and falling out hair and terrible skin. You may well get to 8 stone but you will be so exhausted and ill looking that it will not be a reward! I had bulmia nervosa (and anorexia at times) in my late teens and early 20's. I even got in with a gang of girls with similar interests (dieting and extreme exercise) just to feel 'normal'. I ended up quite thin but also terribly ill and depressed - my metabolism packed up in my 20's and I now have to take lots of tablets every day to replace what is missing. I also have to go to the hospital for check-ups because of on-going illness and fertility problems, as well as dental treatment from all that abuse. I was just like you - prone to gaining weight, dieting to get rid and then putting it back on. I was also miserable all the time because food restriction impacts on your mood. As a psychologist I now have an understanding of eating disorders. If you treat the depression and maladjusted view of yourself then you stop obsessing about food and your weight. It is ok to desire to look good and to keep a healthy weight. It is very bad for your endocrine and cardiovascular system to have extreme weight loss/ gain all the time. The famous singer Karen Carpenter dropped dead aged 32 from heart failure following a period of anorexia nervosa.

You have recognised that you have bulmia, but the brave next step is seeking professional help. Once you get help then you can heal your body and begin eating a balanced diet. It is entirely possible to maintain a healthy body weight without putting yourself through a punishing regime that will fail in the long run.

I know you said not to tell you how how unhealhty it is but I will tell you. Last year in health class we were wathcing a video about binging and you can die from it. I know you're probaly like "Oh, i wont die", but you can. Beacuse every time you throw up theres a certain acid or something dangerous in your puke that can cause problems with your throat and you can end up dying. Plus by binging you're not gonna lose much weight. Its easier to eat right and exercise because that way you would be building muscle and getting all the nutrients you need.
