Ok, so I don't want birth control, but I'm curious. What is, in your opinion, the right age for girls to get birth control? When did you get it? Would you have gone younger or older if you could've done it over?

Thanks

I went on the pill when I was 16, for painful heavy irregular periods aswell as acne & contraceptive reasons.the billings method is not advisable for most people regardless of your beliefs and it doesnt work for most people for so many reasons. Im glad I went on the pill, Im still on it 5 & a half years later, and if you use it together with condoms you will be protected against pregnancy and diseases

I was 16 when on got on BC, but that was after I already got pregnant. So, do it before that happens. Basically if you are sexually active you should be on it.

So_Very_Confused agony auntthere is no right age.

I was put on BCP at age 14 due to menstrual issues...

My daughter at 15 got a boyfriend and they were serious and instead of pretending that it was ok I took her to the GYN and got her BCP too.

If you are in a serious relationship and over the age of consent for where you live and are thinking about having sex then it's time to be on BC of some sort.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (2 June 2011):

basically if a young woman is sexually active then that is the right age for birth control. My stepsister had a boyfriend at 15 and her mother thought she was too young for the pill so refused to let her use it. 4months later she was expecting a baby. I would rather let my young daughter use contraception than have her lose her childhood by becoming mother before shes old enough

Iv been on the pill since I was 17 and it hasnt done any harm.

A female reader, k_c100 United Kingdom +, writes (2 June 2011):

k_c100 agony auntThere is no right 'age' for birth control, it all depends on when you need it. If you have been in a long term stable relationship and are thinking about having sex, then going onto birth control is the right thing to do, regardless of what age you are.

Birth control is for girls who are sexually active, or who are going to be sexually active very soon. Sometimes a doctor may advise it for heavy periods or other medical issues, but unless a doctor recommends you take it I would stay off birth control until you actually need it for sexual reasons.

Many studies have been done into birth control, and using the pill as an example, it has been proven the longer you take the pill the higher your chances are of getting breast cancer. So taking the pill from an early age can increase your risks in this sense. However it has also been proven that the longer you take the pill, the lower your chances are of getting cervical cancer - so it is swings and roundabouts really!

But overall there is no point in taking it unless you are in a long term relationship and going to be having regular sex. If you start taking it before you even have a boyfriend then it will only put you at risk of health problems later in life and it could encourage girls to sleep around rather than waiting until they are in a happy long term relationship.

I was 16 when I started taking the pill and that was because I had been with my boyfriend nearly a year and we were having sex, and I wanted to be protected. We were using condoms, but wanted to make sure we were as safe as possible. I think it was the right age for me - I had a need for it rather than just taking it 'just in case'. I wasnt sleeping around, I had a long term boyfriend and there was a real need to be on birth control.

I hope this helps and good luck!
