This really depends on what kind of "authority figure" he is. In the armed services we cannot have personal relationships within our own commands (especially with a superior). If your situation is something similar I'd reccomend stepping back (just as a matter of protocol/integrity), but as I said it really depends on the kind of authority we're talking about.
