I'd try simple conversation first. once you are more comfortable you can try asking him about more intimate things.
Finally, if you both feel comfortable(this is important) then you could try phone sex. Some guys will like it, some won't.
If you are both interested, you could start with something very sexy like "so, are you by yourself?" in a very soft and sexy tone. If he says yes, you could start phone sex if he answers yes. If he says yes, but follows up with something like "but what on earth are you doing?" he might be uncomfortable.

Mhmm.. I bet u in some new relationship yea? Ok, iv been in this one too. Why don't you guys talk about the tings he likes, especially in a girl. Then you are able to see if you do match to what he suggest is his kind of girl. If u wana knw how he may treat you in your relationship, u may wana know how would he describe his past relationship or what made him and his ex to brake up.. It may help you to also refrain from his ex's mistakes! Dont think hard when you on the phone, relax and let the conversation flow or ask what comes to mind :) peace!!
