Any ideas about what's going through his head?

I have been seeing this guy for 2+ months.. We have known each other for for 10+ years and we have kinda dated off and on.. we have recently started dating again and its been about 2 months so far. I have two kids and he has stated that he loves spending time with us. But is concerned about how my 4 year old son sees him. I have explained to him that he sees him as a friend and nothing more as of now. He has also asked me if I want more children and was asking questions about my birth control and wanting to know if I could physically be able to have more children. I am kind of chicken at asking him questions and don't want to come right out and ask him if he wants to be in a committed relationship with me. He has also told me that he isn't with anyone else.. But then this weekend he told me about his ex and it kind of threw me off. Any ideas about what is going through his head?
