I'm thinking about donating eggs. Please, if anyone has ever had any experience with it, share your story. What are the risks/benefits involved? What were your feelings regarding it? Did you feel it was worth it for whatever reasons you did it for (money or altruism)? Your input would be much appreciated. Thanks =)

A female reader, aunt honesty Ireland +, writes (11 December 2010):

aunt honesty agony auntHi well first of i have never been an egg donor but i thought id voice my opinion regardless.

First of can I say fair play to you for concidering this, its one of the most wonderful gifts in the world to give someone, regardless of why you are doing it and the reward of seeing a couple who cant concieve having a child i would imagine would be the best feeling ever to know that you helped them. Children are precious gifts and its great that you are concidering helping people do this.

If you wish to go ahead with this there are alot of factors that you need to concider:

* Becoming a donor is a long process and you need to make a long term commitment to the donor agency.

* You will need to provide them with all of your medical history to ensure that you are healthy and that you can become a donor.

* Many women do this as a way of making money and its usually the first question many people ask. Every agency pays different amounts but on average a women would recieve $7,000 for the first egg and $7,500 for each egg after that and if you need to travel or stay in rented accomadation then these bills are usually covered.

* All potential egg donors should know that egg retrieval is minor surgery, and that it takes a few days to a week to recover fully following the egg retrieval procedure. As you know, there are potential risks associated with any surgery, including egg retrieval surgery, and egg donor agencies provide egg donors with all of the appropriate aftercare to prevent post-procedure complications. The medical staff affiliated with the egg donor agency will make you aware of all the possible risks and what is involved in the recovery process.

Just remember to think about your decision really carefully and to take your time with it. Good luck.
