I have no idea how to open up to him. I love with all my heart and want nothing more than for our relationship to grow stronger. He told me that he would try to open up more as well. I figured we could work on it together, but I just don't think it's that easy. Any advice? And why is it so hard to open up to him but not that hard to open up to friends when I consider him one of my best friends?

It is obvious you do not feel comfortable opening up to him yet. You will know what to say when you are ready. There is no technique - when you know you are comfortable in revealing secrets or information it will come up in conversation.
