A female United Kingdom age 36-40, anonymous writes:

I have never been on the pill but I am getting quite a bit of hair on my neck and chin, I have made an appointment with my doctor and my friend says she will probably test my hormone levels, how do they do that?

I have googled the pill and the most common type of pill to go on for excess hair is dianette, i was just wondering if anyone had experience on dianette.

I am 26 and never been on the pill and am a bit anxious it could change my body a lot, i am worried about putting weight on and getting headaches etc. as i have never had a problems before.

celtic_tiger agony auntI think no one can give you a definative answer on this, as no pill has the same effect on every woman!. I think because we are all different our bodies deal with the hormones in different ways, so what one woman thinks is a fantastic pill with no side effects, another will hate, and get very very sick on.

In a lot of cases it really is trial and error until you find a pill that suits YOU individually, but I do know that some pills are more expensive, so "some" Doctors may try and fob you off with a cheaper one to start with. Very few women find one that suits them first time out.

I went on the pill Cileste for three months, and it sent me totally crazy, I have never felt so depressed and suicidal in my life - all because of the hormones, and a year later after stopping it I am still having the occasional low patch, all because of the pill. My advice would be, if you really think it is not working, or you are having terrible side effects, go back to the Doctor immediately, and get it changed, dont let them try and fob you off with the "give it time" line. You know your body, and if it feels wrong, go with your gut instinct.

Good Luck!

trueatheart agony auntHi,

I used to take Dianette for my acne and had no problems with it. I took it for 6 years although the nurse later told me I shouldn't have been on it for that long! Anyway, I never had any weight issues whilst taking Dianette, or any problems with headaches but every woman is different.
