Am I related to her and if not would it be right to pursue a relationship?

I have liked this girl for quite a while now and never had the confidence to ask her out for the fear being rejected, my mate says that she likes me but I think he's just saying that to make me feel better. On New Year's Eve she was out and I thought that this was the best time and had even had the confidence to speak to her. On the way home I was speaking to her mate and it turns out that I may be related to her, her dad's brother married my Mum's sister so it turns out that we have the same cousins. My auntie divorced her uncle a long time ago though but I not sure if I am related to her or not.
