First off, there is nothing wrong with liking a particular genre of music. If you don't associate yourself with either Goth OR Emo, then you're not a part of either subculture.Second, this is just my little pet peeve here so I'm going to say it: saying "Goth/Emo"...it's pretty inaccurate. They're too different. :) Goth is a subculture that started around the late 70's, early 80's and is primarily focused on music and atmosphere. There is a larger and more accurate definition that can help, but that requires research.Wiki has a good one, I believe. Also, Marilyn Manson, Evanescence, and H.I.M are not Goth bands despite the labels others put on them. ;) Goth music includes Bauhaus, Siouxsie And The Banshees, Rozz Williams, Specimen, Cinema Strange, and so forth. Emo started around the mid/late 80's, and it is a branch off of punk-rock, and Emo is actually "Emotionally powered punk rock", not anything heavier than that. Too whiny for my tastes, but still. So, by listening to Heavy Metal and the likes, that really has nothing to do with either subculture. Now if you DO associate yourself with one of the subcultures doing research can help with wither deciding if you really want to be a part of either subculture, or if you want to convince your mom that you are/are not a part of the subculture.

The type of music you want to listen to shouldn't get you 'labelled'. You aren't a tin of soup. Besides, if I got labelled for the music I listened to, well, I don't think it'd be a short name :) Goth/emo/metal genres, it's all good stuff, so why not listen to it? It's just people like to have stereotypes. You've got nothing to prove except that you like music, much like the rest of us.

I know tons of people who listen to goth music wear mostly black or have a fetish for chains and skulls (and other typical goth stuff I'm not going to get into). Everything people say about goths are stereotypes. I know this because I'm goth and have to deal with my mom mocking me and stuff. But it's clear you're probably not goth or emo. And don't worry about what others say or think about you. The only opinion that should matter is your own.
