About 2 months ago I drank dandelion tea everyday for a week because I was sick of my body retaining water. I got no result and so stopped, until 2 days ago when I started again, but used 2 teabags for each cup, only drinkng one cup a day. It is really making me pee more and so doing its job I guess, but since this time I have experienced really bad diarrhoea...lots of it! I know Im not allergic to it or anything, so just wondering if its to do with the dandelion "detoxifying" my body?? ALL REPLIES REALLY APPRECIATED, THANX GUYS!!! Reply to this Question Share |

Dandelion is a diuretic so the fact that you're urinating a lot after drinking it sais that it's doing its job. Sometimes drinking herbal teas can have a laxative effect, but sometimes this may be due to drinking something warm - especially early in the morning on an empty stomach.
As for dandelion being dangerous because it depletes the bodies potassium levels then this isn't true. Although excessive urination can deplete the body of potassium, dandelion is loaded with potassium so it doesn't matter.
It's possible that people can have an intolerance or a sensitivity to something, but if you are allergic to something then you'd know it, for instance, do you go into anaphylaxis shock after drinking it?
I wouldn't worry about it, dandelion is healthy stuff and I drink herbal infusions all the time - including dandelion.

you should ask your local naturopath about this... though that is sorta what dandelion tea is 'supposed' to do, as in, cleanse your liver and help your kidney's and bladder work more efficiently - it's supposedly rich in potassium so i wouldn't worry about it depleting potassium from your body as Basschick has written, but make sure you do your research first and get first hand advice from a professional - internet forum sites wont give you the right answer.• Dandelion Root: (Caffiene Free) Rich in potassium. Dandelion works to purify the blood, increase the flow of bile from the liver, build red blood cells, treats gallbladder disease, hepatitis, chronic dyspepsia, indigestion and constipation. 20 bags.

I agree with Basschick, i would really stop taking it! i remember reading somewhere when taken orally dandelion may have mild diuretic and laxative properties. Apparently dandelion can increase the production of stomach acid aswell so an upset stomach is probably common. id be especially carefull if you are taking other medications aswell as they may be reacting badly with them?
im no doc but i think theyre are probably a wide range of reasons for water retention. having a low salt diet is said to be helpful though, maybe you could try that instead?
hope this helps

I don't know much about dandelion tea, but if it's giving you diarrhea and you're peeing alot, I'd stop using it IMMEDIATELY. It is dehydrating your body of important nutrients and this can be very dangerous. When your body gets depleted like that suddenly, you lose a very valuable nutrient called potassium. Your heart functions on potassium. People have been know to go into cardiac arrest (even young people) and have ended up with permanent heart damage when the level of potassium in their body drops suddenly, or too drastically. When you have diarrhea, or are peeing more than normal, you are losing your potassium. How much is too much? It varies with each individual but I would stop drinking this tea at once and for good measure, start eating a few bananas (high in potassium) and maybe for a day, drink pedialyte which will help replace what you've lost. Take action now, and stay away from any types of diet drinks, teas, or diet pills that make you pee alot, or give you diarrhea. It's a dangerous thing. Good luck.
