It may not be that he has changed, but realized that maintaining that kind of a relationship is too complicated and traumatic. He hates himself because he has obviously found finishing the relationship extremely difficult, but on balance less difficult that continuing with it. I think you will have to respect his decision and try to move on, and in time you may feel some relief yourself and also find someone more accessible.
