Well first of all, tread carefully with this guy. The moment you said "I'm the first girl he's opened up to in a long time" and "he feels I am pushing him away", I got suspicious. How can you be pushing someone away after just a week? And what problems has he got that make you the woman he's opened up to in a long time.
That said, I think it's a good idea for you both to meet to see whether this could go. But, there are things that YOU specifically need to observe for your own safety.
1 - Meet in a very public place for the first time.
2 - For the first visit, and other visits, do NOTHING else but meet up publicly to talk and get to know each other. You don't want to find out you're being used for sex, or worse that he's a nutcase.
3 - Take your time.
4 - Make sure your friends know that you're meeting someone (again, this is for safety)
It's a good idea to meet to get to know each other. But like I said, be a bit guarded with this guy. Maybe he has been hurt and he's totally honest. But usually when man say that self pity stuff, they either have way too much baggage, or they're after just sex. So take your time.
