k_c100 agony auntOk to answer your questions in order:

1. A crate is VERY important, it trains the puppy to sleep in one place, not to roam around at night, stops it from chewing your entire house and from weeing or pooing anywhere. It is an important part of toilet training because the dog wont want to wee or poo in its own bed, so it will learn not to wee or poo at night and go to the toilet in the morning and before bed.

2. Toilet training is tricky and you might want to get your parents to help you out on this. NEVER hit the dog or harm it in anyway, you will just scare the dog and make it afraid of humans, hence more likely to bite you in the future. Accidents will happen when it is a puppy, so best to keep it downstairs and away from carpets if possible. Friends of mine have just got a puppy and they are toilet training him by placing a patch of special puppy towels (a bit like kitchen towels) in their living room, and he always has to go to the toilet here. It teaches him to go in one spot, rather than wherever he feels like. Then each week, they reduce the size of the towels until there is just one square for him. Once he has mastered going on this one patch, he can then learn to go outside. But best thing to do is buy a puppy training book - something like this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Perfect-Puppy-Gwen-Bailey/dp/0600585816.

3. You can call your dog whatever you want, Snoop Dogg in my opinion is very silly and you would not want to shout that out in a park when you are walking him. But Fergie is nice.

4. Extra advice - buy a book! I could go on and on forever about what you need to buy, what you need to do, how to train them etc...but a book will have everything you need to know and will prepare you. As long as you are prepared to put in the hard work and dont leave it all to your parents that will be fine. You have to pick up poop, clean up wee, take him or her out for walk in the rain....it is not fun or glamorous all the time so be prepared for times when it is really rubbish. But if you want the dog, you have to be responsible and care for it ALL the time, not just the good bits.

But most of all, dogs are wonderful things and bring a lot of happiness and fun. You are not too young for this and it sounds like you are pretty well prepared for having a dog, with your parents help you will be just fine. Get a book, do your research online and then go ahead and buy the dog, and enjoy it!

I hope this helps and good luck!

This is verified as being by the original poster of the question

I do understand that it is not just for my birthday ive wanted one for ages, and I know that i would love it too pieces and look after it , me and my parents would both pay for it.

I also never go on holiday or go away ever.

And i probaly will get a crate to train it then

i do know alot about having to look after a dog because i have looked alot into it,but im just worried that ill do the wrong stuff because a dog is alot of resbonsability.

I have brother 8 , sister 6 another sister 3 but shes very good with animals very gentle with them, and they would also love it too pieces.

And i will be able to walk it every day because where i live its not like a city its a small town and lots of open fields around .and i will ask a profeesional for more advice thankyou :)

and i first wanted a dog like 3 years ago when we were driving along and on the side of the road was a lil sausage dog in the bushes and we took it home first of all coz it looked hungry and fed it sum food then we took it to an animal shelter.

I just think i would REALLY care for it and love it and try my very best to give it a good and loving home.

celtic_tiger agony auntok, puppies are not just for birthdays but for a long long time!

They cost money. Starting with buying the crate. Then there are vaccinations (if it is a young puppy you will probably have to get boosters and top ups), then having it neutered, yearly vaccinations... not to mention food, equipment, bedding...

Are you paying for all this, or your parents?

Then there is the walking aspect - are you going to do that every day?

As for toilet training, this is something that has to be done properly, and you should NEVER harm an animal, ever!

(im going to assume sat = shout here, you really need to work on your English, (waan? Want to.., advise? Advice)) Shouting also doesnt really work after the accident has happened, this is all training you will have to read up on BEFORE you get a dog of any kind. NEVER get an animal before you have read all the information you need to provide basic care.

Animals are hard work, they take a lot of effort, but are rewarding and lifelong friends. They give you as much love as you give them.

I would say, spend less time about what you are going to call this puppy and more time learning about how to look after it.

tennisstar88 agony aunt1. Pet store professionals are going to recommend crate training because it doesn't want to pee/poo where it sleeps. I wouldn't put it in bed with you unless you want to wake up and find a brown little present. (Have had it happen)

So I would save up the $ for a crate.

2. Like Caring Guy said, ask the pet associate, even the vet. Every dog is different, and owners have various ways of potty training a dog.

3. Whatever you want to name your pet.

4. Have you checked the animal shelters and rescues for a puppy? I've seen pure bred chihuahuas there as well. It is going to be a lot cheaper than buying one from a breeder (whom may or may not be running a puppy mill), or a pet store. Plus you'll be giving a dog who needs a home, a permanent loving home.

For questions 1 and 2, you might be better going to a pet store an getting some advice about how to look after dogs. That way you'll get proper advice from professions.

Q3 - The names are as good as any others.

Q4 - Just remember dogs are a huge amount of effort, so make sure you're committed to looking after it, and not just having a dog as a fashion statement. You don't want to wind up looking nuts like Paris Hilton or something.
