A female United Kingdom age 36-40, anonymous writes:

My husband and I are going skiing for the first time. We have a package that includes rental hire which includes boots. My husband is 6ft 7 and wears size 14 UK shoes. I am very concerned that we may get there and there could be a chance they are not going to stock this size at the resort which is meant to be a popular one in Europe. The rep has said that they are sure they will have something. But from my experience, whenever we have gone to activities that require him to have footwear, not all places cater.

So my question is really for skiiers and especially the tall ones. Do ski resorts in Europe normally have really big sizes etc - or do you think we will have alot of difficulty in finding the right size? I know of course someone is going to tell me to just buy boots to be on the safe side - but after all the money we have forked out - I really have no more money to fork out on buying new boots. Also if the price is meant to include boot hire then it seems I will be paying twice to just go and buy / rent JUST in case - esp when they might well have big sizes there. So PLEASE not really looking for that advice as that is not the question I am asking...The question is really wanting to know the possibility of there being such a wide array of sizes (for taller people) Of course the agent will tell me anything to sell the tour - then if we get there and find they have nothing to fit him it will mean we cant ski and it would have been a waste of money. So would just like an honest opinion from experienced, taller / big footed people.

Thanks!

hannah76 agony auntHello,

Yes, you need to do this well in advance before you travel. My bf is a 13(48 euro) and we always arrange a pair through our travel agent or we phone the actual hotel/resort. Any sizes from 12 to 14 are considered outsizes. And i know that on a couple of occassions he had to make do with a 12.

If you plan to ski regularly after this, is it an idea to purchase a pair of size 14 and then your husband can bring his own. i know this may seem a lot to do for maybe once or twice a year but 13 and 14 are outsize like girls 9 to 11's.

Hope vacation goes well, xxx

I don't ski - far too cold and I hate falling on my arse - but if I were in his shoes I'd contact the resort direct if possible, or if not, through the travel agency you booked with and ask them to find out for you and, if need be, booking a pair of size 14's in advance.

Reps are notoriously un-knowledgeable about things as they're usually students on a gap year or something!

yum yum agony auntYou should make sure in advance that the shop were you are going to hire your ski's have the size and ask them to look in their stock and put them aside for your husband. Size 14(UK) is size 50 in europe its a really big shoe size. If they do have size 14(UK) they proberly have only a few in stock. Just to let you know that a new pair is minimum 200 euros. Finding a second hand pair would be very difficult because of the size. Take care!
