Yeh, Take Rcn's advice, Talk about her, Or find something you have in common with her, Like a TV show you both watch ?
Just remember to listen !
Good luck !

Asking open question always helps too. Instead of asking something like: 'Do you like...' which has a simple yes/no answer, try asking questions with a 'what/who/how/why' start so that she can elaborate and then you can find out her opinions and compare them with yours.
Best of luck xx

start off by maybe talking about school/work then go with something personal and then let it finish by her talking bout herself.

my advice is to have her talk about herself. what are her likes and dislikes. you'll get further than anything else since people enjoy talking about them. When she does, you listen. Don't change the subject, just listen to her.
