It's only when you first start the pill, it takes 7 days for it to start working. You can have sex on your 7 day break without getting pregnant but you'll be on your period so sex wouldn't be a good idea anyway!

The pill protects you even when you are on your 7 day break when you have your period - this is because the pill works by stopping your ovaries releasing an egg. So even when you have your 7 day break for your period - there is no egg to be fertilised.
This no sex for 7 days after your first pill rule only applies to when you first start your pill; as in the first ever pack you take. So basically if you have been taking your pill for the 21 days and have now come to your break, then you will be fine.
But I cant imagine why you would want to have sex for the first time whilst you are on your period?! I'm sure you will want the experience to be special and romantic - being on your period will stop that ever happening!
The pill is very effective and there is very little chance of you getting pregnant as long as you take it at roughly the same time each day and you are not sick or have diarrohea. If in doubt use condoms too - this will prevent any STD's!
