writes: I recently started working at a new job, I've only been there two days and I already feel as though the managers are trying to take advantage of me. They've called me to come in at the very last minute and my hours are pretty erratic, I've worked both the morning and night shifts in the same week. So far, I've been scheduled to work only 7 hours both days, will be working 7.5 hours tomorrow and it looks like this is a going to be a trend. I don't know if my schedule will be more than 5 days a week yet, but if it isn't, it means I'm going to be missing out on full-time benefits by an hour to half an hour per day. I really need coverage and this is the main reason I took the job, aside from needing a steady cash flow. I hate to think I'm so close to full benefits and possibly working my ass off for minimum wage for nothing.My question is how do I handle this situation? Should I wait to say something to the manager since I just started, or should I speak up now while it's still early? Reply to this Question Share |

I think if you don't deal with the situation right now it can just fester. If you don't say anything then management will assume you are accepting the job for what it is. It will be brave to speak up as a 'new broom' in the job but you can see where this is leading. If you don't feel able to talk to your manager, what about someone senior in human resources? You should read through your employment contract (if you have one) to identify anything in there that protects your job benefits. The alternative is to stick it out for a couple of weeks while you quietly try to find another job.
