hi all agony aunts

just a question. I am on my 1st pregnancy and so a little clueless about things.

im only 28 weeks pregnant but a scan 2 days ago shown that my lil baby was already lying with her head downwards as if she was preparing to be born ... hopefully she's just having a wriggle around.

I am currently being monitored for possible preeclampsia which my midwife and doctor told me can sometimes bring on premature labour.

I was just wondering, for about the past 5/6 hours I have had a constant period style pain ... and just now I went to the bathroom and noticed my underwear was wet...however have not felt as if I have wet myself and have not felt any sort of trickle of any kind either??

how will I know if my waters break (as it sometimes can be just a little I've been told) or if for some reason im just sweating down there...and are the period style pains normal at all?

yesterday I did feel just a few tightening feelings in my stomach but they were not painful .. just uncomfortable

thank you

I had the same a couple of times with my 1st, but it was just a lot of discharge (sorry tmi), but I only found that out after going to the midwives, who do a speculum so they can see if its still on tact.

So_Very_Confused agony auntall medical concerns should be addressed with the doctor or midwife.

both of my babies were ALWAYS head down. NEITHER came vaginally even though they wanted to.

when my water BROKE it was a gush and I felt a POP both times.

now if you have a Trickle.. that's bad. are you feeling the baby move as usual. that's a good thing.

I suggest you call the doctor or midwife and express your concerns and ask to be seen ASAP instead of waiting for your appointment as you are anxious and anxiety is not good for you or the little one.

YouWish agony auntYou're going to be okay!

I agree with Honeypie - you're probably feeling some mild Braxton-Hicks, which are nothing to worry about! It's scary when your body doesn't feel like your own at times, eh?

Water breaking is pretty dramatic. Mine broke and soaking ensued fairly rapidly. The amniotic fluids were pretty constant up until it was time for my son to come into the world.

I also agree - it's very good that you and your doctor are keeping a close eye on everything. Let him or her know every pain, and watch that pre-eclampsia. I had it too and went on bedrest because my pregnancy became pretty seriously high-risk. Bedrest is NOT fun...I'm used to moving and going and being forced to stay in bed was torture!

"What to expect..." is a really good book for clinical stuff, but my all-time favorite first time pregnancy book was "The Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy". Awesome read, and they talked nitty-gritty stuff on everything! No book put me at ease more than that one did, because it made me feel like my childbirth experience wasn't going to be like the chestbursting scene on Alien.

Vaginal discharge is normal in varying forms. By the way, speaking of wetness - the pregnancy orgasm is AWESOME! But anyways, call the doctor and talk to them. You staying calm and low stress is as good for your health as those prenatal horse pills, so go set your mind at ease and talk to your DR.

Honeypie agony auntYou are probably having Braxton Hicks contractions ( They are sporadic uterine contractions that start about 6 weeks into your pregnancy, although you won't be able to feel them that early. You probably won't start to notice them until sometime after mid-pregnancy)

They are (I believe) your body's way of preparing your uterus for birth.

They do not really hurt they are just odd feeling.

My oldest turned around a lot.... settling but down up on til the night SHE broke my water ( my guess is when she turned around).

It was not a little for me.. like maybe 1/2 cup of fluids?

I would honestly talk to your doctor if you feel like you are "leaking" fluids.

Better go in ONE time to many. Specially if you are on preeclampsia watch.

It can be something as simple as just producing a bit more More vaginal discharge then normal. Which is quite normal. Keep up on your water intake.

I had contractions from about 4 months on (and not the Braxton Hicks kind) with my second pregnancy and was put on bed rest. They expected me to deliver early. She (the baby) had other ideas and I was induced at 40 weeks.. She was a big old baby. 4.4 Kg & 55 cm.

Call your doctor. :)

C. Grant agony auntIf you're unsure, call your midwife or a medical help line. No point wondering and worrying.

This is an amazing book -- I recommend it to everyone who is pregnant for the first time:
