writes:At 19 I haven’t ever had a proper girlfriend. Over the past few years I have had two ‘flings’ and since starting university a couple of one night stands, so I’m not inexperienced or a virgin but I’ve never had a proper, long term and committed relationship before. My life isn’t preoccupied by this issue, many of my friends are single even if they’ve been in relationships before but I’m becoming slightly concerned that I’m “old” never to have had a proper girlfriend. I’m not the most confident guy out there and I struggle in simply walking up to females in a bar or pub and ‘chatting them up’ as I do with the prospect of telling someone I like them and actually asking them out, so in that respect my character doesn’t really help me. I suppose I’m asking whether or not my situation is normal for a nineteen-year-old male. Should I be concerned about my lack of experience in developing then maintaining relationships or is it common enough, and one which will resolve itself in whatever ways over the next few years as things fall into place?

 I think it's pretty normal. There is no expiration date on you as far as dating, so take it easy enjoy uni.
Practice your social skills, university is a great place for it.
And relax. :)

 No I wouldn't be worried, I am a similar age and will be hopefully starting University this autumn and I have never had a serious boyfriend or even anyone to call a 'boyfriend'. I had a year on-off fling thing with this one guy and to be honest I wouldn't even advise that. I do believe that things will happen when they happen just don't think about it too much. I once heard a wise quote saying if you have ambitions of happiness and success tie them onto something and not someone, such as a career not a person. I would probably say i'm a picky person with relationships unlike many I wouldn't just be with someone because I could or that they had an interest in me, I be with someone because I want to be. Don't worry there are many of us in the same situation, enjoy life!
