A age 30-35, * writes:

My best friend doesn't really act like it anymore, she doesn't talk to me as much as she used to.

We have been best friends for a while.

A couple months ago this girl started hanging out with us, she is friends with my best friend but I don't like her because of something that she did to me a few years ago that I can't get over.

My best friend gave us nicknames and then I found out that she changed the other girls nickname but she hasn't changed mine because supposedly she can't think of a new name for me.

She says she tells me everything first but some things she tells me the other girl already knows.

She used to invite me to come over to her house and spend the night all the time and now she doesn't. She asked the other girl if she was coming home with her tonight, I was right there and I got a little hurt.

When the other girl is around my friend doesn't really talk to me, they talk to eachother and basically I'm just a tag-along.

My friend says that her and the other girl are drifting apart but I really don't see it.

I was just wondering what you guys think, am I loosing my best friend or am I over reacting?

A female reader, anonymous, writes (4 May 2012):

yes I think you are losing your best friend, I'm sorry about it. It sucks I know.

But this is normal. And it doesn't mean it's always going to be like this forever.

it's normal for people to make new friends and become close to them. You could certainly make new friends too just like her.

it's also normal that people will drift apart for awhile and then get closer again later in the future. so even if you are losing your best friend now, it could change later in the future.

it's also possible that you can have more than just one best friend. Just because she's really close friends with the other girl doesn't mean you can't also still be close to her.

my advice is to just go with the flow, and make new friends of your own too. Spread out your capacity for friendship among many people, don't put all your eggs into one basket or one person.

when you get older you will realize that it's possible and common to still be best friends even if your daily lives are not closely entwined. if she is someone you can always count on if you need it and vice versa, if she will make time for you when you are in trouble and vice versa, if she has your back and you have her back, then you are best friends even if you don't spend a lot of time together every day.

Starlights agony auntWell it sounds like your bestfriend has this other girl as a bestfriend too, so it could be she's enjoying her other friends company over yours.

If your bestfriend is your bestfriend you could never lose her over her choosing another person, because she loves you if she's your bestfriend.

If you feel a tag along, then make other friends so you dont feel left out.

In friendships people do change and sometimes can drift apart, this is normal.
