Mankind has written laws; which mimic (or are derived from) religious doctrines against bad-behavior. Everyone agrees there is evil, but differ on where it comes from.
If you practice any form of Christianity, where you believe in God, and that Jesus Christ (The Son of God) is your way to God and heaven; the Bible literally specifies what God considers to be sin. Man will justify just about anything as okay; but sin is an act or action that a deity (or a god) usually will define for mankind. Religious doctrines of all kinds define sin as anything hurtful, hateful, evil, or an offense to God. God is an omnipotent, omniscient, immortal being. Of infinite intellect, limitless power, holy, pure, perfect, and of an unmatched nature. The Creator of all things, seen and unseen. Majestic and almighty. Only He can decide what is a sin, according to Christian belief.
The Holy Bible does not specify masturbation to be a sin.
The Bible does denounce any form of sexual impurity or fornication; or lustful-thoughts that preoccupy the mind, and affects the behavior in a way that would cause you to violate God's law and commandments. He does consider any behavior that leads to perversion or can overtake the mind sinful.
Christians are taught that God considers the body a temple, where His Holy Spirit dwells within us. In Christianity, God sets rules for those who love and wish to obey Him. If you don't believe in Jesus, or God; He leaves it up to you to decide for yourself what you want to do, and what you want to believe. God does not force Himself on mankind; and He lets us come to Him of our own free-will.
Nothing is a sin, if you belief God is a mythical being. In the secular world of unbelievers, sin is an archaic meaningless term; because there is no belief in a benevolent deity. Therefore, nothing is sinful. It's okay if everybody does it, and you can getaway with it.

No sex b4 marring: In my late teens my girlfriend and I would confess every 2 weeks how many times we had sex. We both had big appetites. She had a little OCD problem and would put a slash in a memo pad after every time we did it, a real stickler for details (people call her Doctor now). We'd go confession almost at the same time, one to the Priest's right, one left. "Make sure you say 27x, you can't being saying 26x, and after I said 27." After 3 months the priest (always the same progressive one) told us to stop writing down every time you do it and confessing. Just accept responsibility if she gets pregnant. He said something like ~you obviously love each other, you do it so freaking often.~

You have to take responsibility for yourself and decide what is ok for you.
I'm not sure that this is even discussed in religious circles but as far as I know it's not a problem.

Different religions have widely different views , from "a mortal sin " via "reproachable but no big deal " to "totally ok ". For instance, for Roman Catholics is a sin, and so it is for Islam. For many Protestant churches is not a sin as long as it does not became an addiction. For most Pagans not only is not a sin, but it is a good thing because all acts of love, including self love, are sacred to the gods. So, you made a covenant with God, but - which is your God ?
