It was painfull because:
1. Your hymen was broken (hence the bleeding)
2. You were probably quite tight from not having had sex before and also because you were probably a bit tense about having sex for the first time.
This is all normal and I very much doubt that it would be equally painfull again. The second time could still be slightly sore, but should feel better and better over time. Eventually it will be pain free and very enjoyable.
Try and relax and make sure that you are properly turned on (ie. lubricated), before penetration. Do not worry about his size, the vagina is wonderfully flexible and can most certainly accomodate him!
Share your fears with your partner. He will understand. Tell him to take it very slowely and to stop if you want him to.

 I think what you experienced was the busting of your hyman. Now that that is out of the way, it shouldn't hurt the next time. Lubrication (k-y jelly or something along that line) should help if it's too tight. Take it slow.
I've got 3 inches . . . but most girls don't like it that wide.

reader, anonymous, writes (18 September 2006): Women usually bleed when they first have sex so that isn't too likely to happen the next time you have sex, but you might experience pain for a while as your boyfriend is large as you say. You will probably get used to it though.
My boyfriend is also large. He wasn't my first but he was bigger than I had ever had and that was painful. After about a month or so I started to get used to it.
