Nope, I don't think he'll see it that way and why should he? But, if you haven't been seeing each other that long, he might feel awkward accepting expensive gifts from you. So his reaction depends on how comfortable you two are with each other...I think it'd be a sweet gift-you can make it your early birthday present to him :)
