Things that she has not accepted in the past we have ended up doing...Yet the problem is we only talk be email unless it is in person. It is currently exam period in uni so that means we aren't going to meet until after they finish so I couldn't ask her personally. The thing is, she won't give me answer either way. I like her very much as a friend as well, and unless she gives a definite no then I am not sure how our friendship can be normal. Why can she not just say no if she isn't interested?!Sorry this as much a chance to vent frustrations as it is to ask the question...

Well if you say "I would like to take you out on a date. Would you like that? Or do you want to just stay as friends?"
If she answers anything other then yes then just say "I'll take that as a no and leave you alone for a while till I am ready to be friends again."
If you tell her that you are going to cut contact for a little while and she DOES want to be more than friends then she will make an effort to stop you.
Good Luck!! xx
