Just ask him why he thinks it's a big deal. Maybe he was wearing loose pants that created a tent pole effect or maybe he's never gotten far enough with a girl to experience it before and know it's a natural reaction to sexual stimulation.
There is also the possibility he's just insane and obsessed with his penis and wanted to highlight that he was erect and make sure you were aware so you compliment him or some shit.
Seriously ask him, see what he says. I'd be interested in knowing to be honest, because it's something that's only an embarrassment to a pre-teen or in school.
