writes: Hey,I am 19 and on summer break from university. Last year I was fairly lazy/depressed and didn't get a summer job. The year before that I worked for two months at my fathers work on weekends. So this year, after having done very little as I don't have a social life anymore (long story, I live at home so barely meet uni people and I am not on speaking terms with a lot of people I used to know, or we've fallen badly out of contact) I decided I needed a job.I sent out several CV's, no replies. An HMV application for a perfect weekend job yielded a rejection because they count 2 months retail experience as none at all for some reason, making me uneligible. The big problem here came from my recent job interview. I found out the local McDonalds, where a cousin is a manager and another old school friend works, had a job going. I applied, specifying it had to be weekends, and got the interview. I showed up 5 minutes early, dressed in a shirt and trousers, looking very presentable, I shook the guys hand and was fairly confident and personable, I had a good answer for every question, and I even said I could probably do extra shifts during the week. When asked about whether or not I'd stick it out over 6 months, which is what he needed, I said definitely, but I guess I implied over a year wasn't guaranteed. At any rate, I did make it seem like I could last 2 more years, at least, potentially. At one point he even said I had the job, then quickly re-phrased it to an "if you have the job". He also made a point of keeping my references and a photocopy of my birth certificate. He said he'd write out my results and then mail them to me. Next morning I got an e-mail saying I hadn't been successful, no explanation. This is sort of knocking my confidence a lot... I mean, I understand that they probably just found someone with less committments. But my manager cousin worked full-time at uni whilst McDonalds hired her. My friend only works weekends. They even knew I could only work them as well. Everyone kept saying it was so easy to get hired I'd be guaranteed a job, so now it's as if I'm deeply pathetic now because I even got turned down from there. I don't get it. The interview seemed to go really really well. Now I guess i need to find new job options, but at the moment they're a nightmare to find, and I fear I'm going to continually get shot down over not working last summer or being a student. Any advice on why I probably failed my interview, and what to do next?

I don't know if you've heard but there is a recession on...
This means that no matter how good you are in your interview, there will be 5 other people who are better and more qualified.
The jobs that you would have got last year are now going to people who wouldn't dream of taking that job normally but are desperate and applying for anything.
I've been rejected from 8 jobs so far this year and told that it's not anything wrong with me, there are just far FAR more experienced people out there on the job market.
Keep trying but don't get your hopes up about ANYTHING until you have signed a contract.
In the mean time, go and cut lawns, dig people's weeds, wash cars, and do all the things like paper rounds that you wouldn't normally consider.
Everyone else is coming down a step on the ladder so you should too.
Good Luck!! xx

I have experienced something simular, i went to a job interview for a nursery got told i had the job then a week later i recieved a letter to say i was unsucessful. I had to go back to the job centre and reclaim my jobseekers allowance which caused alot of bother for myself, they even made me telephone the employer to find out what happened and they said they sent the letter out by mistake. They then promised to take me on but all i got was excuse after excuse and then the manager was meant to have walked out which i later found out was untrue and they done the same to 3 other girls. Sadly it is becoming harder to get a job now but i wish you good luck.
