A

I am also a bit bemused as to why you were surprised you weren't scared. Why were you expecting to be scared of your boyfriend's penis?

He might be a virgin so he was afraid or maybe he was on the verge of ejaculating.

Possibly he suddenly felt guilty or ashamed of what you two were doing . . . but it's more likely that he was suddenly aware of an imminent orgasm, or he suppressed an orgasm.
Why? Both guys and girls are socially conditioned to think of orgasm as a very personal thing. Even though you are boyfriend/girlfriend, he may not have been ready to share that event with you. Some people, guys as well as girls, go through life afraid to really express their climax when they're with a partner even though they twitch and quiver and vocalize if they are masturbating in total privacy.
Or, he knew that as soon as he climaxed he would lose all his sexual arousal and not be interested in any further sexual activity. (A common complaint among women is that guys roll over and go to sleep as soon as they finish, while girls want to at least continue cuddling and caressing.) He may have stopped you just short of his climax so that the two of you could continue your lovemaking.

A
