Why can't people just say no or I can't from the very beginning instead of making promises they cannot keep? I am just feeling very overwhelmed because I really feel like so many people like to talk and don't comit to their word. I feel like buying a dog and running away from everything cause then I will know I can only depend on myself.:( Reply to this Question Share |

One great piece of advice by Oldersister.
I may add a little cultural bias, perhaps. In some cultures, saying an outright "no" seems impolite or dangerous, so people sugar-coat their refusal by not saying "no" but giving you a convoluted "maybe". A "maybe" that most usually becomes a "never".
And then, some other people like to make promises because that makes them look better than they are. See also: politicians.
I'm afraid the only solution is to do as Oldersister does.
