Why has my platonic friend been more distant lately?

A female United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

I'm really good friends with this guy. I love him to death (purely platonic) and he always knows just what to say to make me feel better.

Well lately though, I've noticed that he's been more distant. I'll instant message him, and it will take him twenty minutes to respond when usually he'll always IM me the second I sign online. I'll call him and he'll have to go within five minutes versus usually we'll talk for hours it seems. Same with talking in person.

We are both generally shy and quiet people but when we're close and open with each other.

(I'm not being annoying about talking to him by the way. I don't IM or call him constantly every five minutes then wonder why he has to go so quickly. I only try talking to him a few times a week.)

We went to hang out at the beach together a few weeks ago, and the days leading up to that he would talk to me all the time telling me how excited he was. But then after that, nothing.

I worry sometimes that maybe he just thinks I'm too young and silly to hang out with (he's two years older than me). It's so frustrating because I'm not completely immature but I just don't know why he's acting so distant. I don't want to lose him as a friend, that would crush me.

A female reader, lboon United Kingdom +, writes (21 July 2008):

hi there i had this problem with a guy friend i had , we were very close then suddelnly he stopped replying to my texts ect , i became worried about him .. so i called he answered and was still very strange. After this i left it a long time then he got back in touch , i asked him why he had treated me this way , and he confessed to having feelings for me and was unsure of how to act around me . I did not have feelings for him only as a very close mate.. since he has met someone and were ok again. Maybe this guy is feeling the same about you you never know xxx
