Why does my b/f get soft and hard when we have sex?

A female United States age 26-29, anonymous writes:

My boyfriend and I are both 18. We had sex twice now, safely with the pill and condoms. Arousal isn't a problem but he softens and hardens throughout the whole time. I can feel the difference but I'm not sure if it's because he's overexcited or if there is a problem with me.

A male reader, eddie85 United States +, writes (24 August 2013):

eddie85 agony auntThere could be lots of reasons why this is happening:

1) Condoms cut sensitivity and sometimes circulation to the penis. For a guy this can cause a loss of erection. While I don't want to discourage you from using a condom, this could be a source of the problem.

2) If you are having marathon sex -- meaning longer than 30 minutes, most guys will go soft from time to time.

3) It is more than likely nerves. He could be so absorbed into pleasing you or having fears of losing an erection that he gets distracted. Sometimes the whole "erection" thing is a head game...

4) Be sure that you aren't feeling like you are sneaking around. If you are trying to be quiet, or doing it in a place where you shouldn't, that too can cause confidence problems.

Finally, I don't think the problem is you or that you are doing something wrong. It could be a bunch of things or one of the above. The most important thing is for both of you to relax and enjoy the "ride".
