Why does he get my hopes up then doesn't follow through?

My boyfriend broke up with me a week ago and after he promised we get back together and that he loved me. But to day he was acting so mean when I wanted to tell him hi! In the morning and he was like I need my space. So I don't know why he's putting my hopes up and then shooting my self esteem down
