A female United States age 41-50, anonymous writes:

Why do people smoke and drink and enjoy it? I know this sounds stuck up, but I honestly cannot understand how people can not only enjoy but also become addicted to this nasty-smelling, nasty-tasting, just plain foul stuff... I have been sh**-faced drunk before, but I can count the number of times on ten fingers. I have smoked pot before, and again can count it on ten fingers. I tried to enjoy both, but honestly could very well do without both for the rest of my life, and could never ever make it a habit. Does anyone have any insight?

hannah76 agony auntHello,

Cigarette smoking is drug addiction.

Tobacco has the nicotine so the person becomes quickly addicted. The cigarettes and smoke are the way the nicotine is taken in. If there were not nicotine in the cigarettes, they would be pretty useless. Imagine just sucking a piece of paper and breathing in smoke and blowing it out. Where it becomes different is when you add nicotine to it. Then the person gets the hit of the nicotine drug. The hit relieves the previous loss of nicotine. So, what you are doing is keep topping up the loss of nicotine from your body. In all fairness, if you never smoke a cigarette, then you will never have this loss that the cigarettes create.

People have different reasons as to why they do or don't smoke or drink. Some do it because they like it, some are addicted and some people I know do it because they don't care what happens to them, Everyone knows the risks with it, and it is a personal choice. Whether a person does or does not smoke or drink themselves, respect needs to be given that it is their choice and their life, and everyone has a right to make their own decisions about their life, no matter who they are.

I think people get addicted because it feels good. Its like a break from real life. Im sure addicts know its unhealthy... But its a temporary break until they have to face daily life. Sometimes most times its a stress realiver. I drink and smoke pot but rarely almost never. I used to smoke cloves when stressed i hardly ever smoked a full cig. It almost makes u light headed. A stress realiver. But when i found myself getting addicted or doing too often i stopped.

I don't smoke and don't like the sensation of being a passive smoker. I like drinking (but not so I get totally rat-arsed) because it's a social time with friends, it relaxes you, and depending on how you mix it, it can taste really pleasant. Hope this helps :)

YouWish agony auntI have never tried pot, and when I've tried smoking, I couldn't take the feel of my lungs, or the smell of my breath and clothes, so I never get into it.

Alcohol in moderation is really nice. It's like the stress of the week melts away. However getting wasted drunk I can't stand, and I hate the sick hangover the next day more. I don't think I have much of an addictive tendency though.

People smoke because they are addicted and more than likely started years ago, i smoke and i have done since i was 14, its a personal choice to begin and to carry on, fair play in public people shouldn't exhale next to other people i don't because it's rude to blow smoke in people's faces. Smoking pot is relaxing again its a personal choice and people do it because they want to. i don't know how many times I've been really drunk but i do know its fun. it's something to unwind from school, work, college whatever. you don't need it to have fun but ... why not. to be honest, each to their own if it doesn't affect you i wouldn't complain it could be a lot worse
