A reader, anonymous, writes (10 December 2009):

Without more information, there could be many possibilities. Maybe they aren't "friends," but rather "acquaintances". Also ask yourself if you do your part as a friend- do you ask them about their life, job, hobbies, significant others, etc.? Instead of being down about friends, get involved with other activities, sports, hobbies, clubs, etc. so you give yourself a chance to meet new people. It's not easy, but once you get out there and meet people, you'll know lots of people and over time this will lead to more friendships. I've been in your shoes before, and it is sad to see friends leave, but it also gives you time to think about yourself- what you like to do, your passions in life, and a chance to figure out what your life is really about. Take care and try not to stress too much!
