Why do I suddenly feel guilty after masturbating?

A female United States age 36-40, anonymous writes:

I started masturbating when I was 13 years old, and have never felt any guilt about it until recently (8 years later). It feels great and I don't feel bad while I'm doing it, but afterward I now find that I am feeling very guilty/ashamed/embarrassed with myself.

I believe that there is a sexuality spectrum, but would identify myself as being on or closer to the straight end. The reason I bring this up is because sometimes I will think of girls (which I have always done) and am wondering if that is where a lot my guilt is coming from? I find two women together to be attractive and this allows me to safely explore things, but I have no desire to date or experiment with a woman. Why now am I feeling this guilt? I guess I'm just curious to see what other peoples thoughts are, looking for advice!

I admit I do masturbation.

I started to do this thing when I was in 5th Grade.

But I already felt the sensation when I was 10.

I never felt guilty of it until I reached 15, when our Religion teacher told us that masturbation is a commission of adultery or simply a sin.

But never have I stopped totally masturbating despite of that guilt-thing. But as I reached my 17 (I'm now 18), I have read different articles that "why feel guilty" and so on. That is why I have tried to not feel guilty after every masturbation. I keep on thinking that it's part of human growth and development and I am not the only in this world that has ever existed who has masturbated..

A female reader, gloriatan Malaysia +, writes (22 April 2010):

When one masturbates, one gets the dopamine rush that comes with orgasm. That explains the fulfilled feeling. However, immediately after the orgasm, one can feel guilty and disgusted. This creates more tension and lowers the dopamine levels leading to the urge to masturbate again. The cycle of release, fulfillment and guilt is created. BTW I have kicked the masturbating habit for good through a Christian inner healing and deliverance ministry.

Embarrassed?

Ashamed?

The only one that does it?

Just look at the number of sex shops there are, both online and in the high street, with a hefty turnover and customer base - and all the Lesbian porn books, magazines and videos on sale too. Some bought by men (more women for our money!) but most bought by women.....

It's normal; it's natural - and great fun to, so no need to stop, or feel abashed by it.

I used to feel the same way. I think watching women in a sexual mind set it very appealing.. however, i am completely straight and dont find women attractive in reality.. its just a guilty pleasure. everyone has them. embrace it :)

A male reader, GrimmReality United States +, writes (7 August 2009):

GrimmReality agony auntWell considering that you are still pretty young, and also considering that you believe in the Sexuality Spectrum, there may be a couple of things.

Think back to your more formative years, when your peers lacked a lot of maturity, The taunts that guys (and girls get) that goes with the standard H.S. and Junior high experience. Kids equate masturbation as something bad. How many times have you heard kids back in HS get called "Jackoffs", etc?

Of course it was used as an insult to attack someone as being sexually inept, or that they were incapable of intimacy, etc.

Then think back to how reactionary and perhaps conservative some kids you knew in school were. The same type of stuff. Taunts about sexuality, ripping on someone who may or not be gay. That kind of stuff. Tactless High School Stuff.

Maybe people you were exposed to had very absolutist views about things like masturbation. Were your parents fairly upfront about The Birds and The Bees when you were younger or did they shy away from the subject?

Maybe in some way since you have grown into adulthood and you have become more aware of your own sexuality. I really think that everyone at any point in their lives can have moments where they re-evaluate things. In this case, maybe you are re-evaluating your own sexuality to some extent. and maybe all the stuff you heard directed at other people way back when may creep back into your head after you complete the deed.

It obviously is worrying you to some extent. Of course masturbation is very natural and anyone with a libido does it.

I would suggest that maybe you speak to a sex therapist or a counselor if it is affecting how you feel about yourself. The worst thing we can do to ourselves is to deny your feelings and maybe through some therapy you can get the real answers.
